Fishing Calendar & How We Fish
September
September is a Great
Time to Fish!!!

September is a Great Time to Fish. As the October King Spawning Run approaches, Kings stagging at the St. Joseph Pier Head become a Prime Target.

September Fishing is really a continuation of the excellent August Fishing with more Adult Kings. Fishing at the 100’ Deep Water Break is Outstanding, and Very Reliable. Fishing Afternoon Charters at the Pier Head when boat traffic thins out are Thrilling! These fish are naturally “Boat Shy” they bite much better when there are fewer boats, and less pressure. FISH ON!!!

Chris Hazel is standing to the left. These guys were Good Fishermen, and tough Sailors. We fished 4-6’ Waves, they didn’t mind they were all about Catching Fish. Everyone helped out Brian Hazel in the Blue T-Shirt nearly ran the whole Bird Program by himself. Good Job Guys. I’m looking forward to next time. FISH ON!!!

I Chartered a Fishing Trip for my family and friends with Captain Russ Jarvis aboard the Fin Nailer this past September, and we had the absolute best time on this trip. I grew up fishing Lake Michigan with my dad and brothers, and I have to say the experience we had on the Fin Nailer was Great.

Captain Russ never stopped working for us, trying new water areas, different lures and presentations for catching some BIG FISH. The Fin Nailer is a great boat to fish on the big lake.
We had some Big Lake Rookies with our group who
are now Seasoned Pros thanks to Captain Russ. We are definitely going to be back on the water with Captain Russ aboard the Fin Nailer!
Thanks again Captain for a Great Time!
Chris Hazel and the guys.

Jerry Curry’s 2nd Charter Fishing Trip was just as productive as the July 16th Trip. They Boated over 30 Fish. We revived and returned several Kings. I always have a Great Catch with these guys on the boat. Nicely Done Guys!!

Nice Mixed Bag Catch of Fish. Check out the 20+ lb Lake Trout in the lower center. Not Bad for that Man’s 1st Time Out!

You Don’t Need to be an Experienced Fisherman to be Successful with Fin Nailer Fishing Charters. FISH ON!!!

Greg Martin (standing to left) Booked a Fishing Charter for his Buddies. We had a Great Time. All had several turns on the Rod. Nice Mixed Bag Limit Catch. FISH ON!!!

Captain Russ,

The Fin Nailer is one of the cleanest boats I have ever been on as a Charter. It was large enough for 6 big guys to have ample room to move around.

Captain Russ has an incredible knowledge of fishing and the Lake. He knows where the fish area and just what bait to use to catch the Big Ones. He also ran multiple sets which resulted in multiple Fish being caught at the same time. There is nothing like 3 or 4 Fish hitting the poles at the same time. Now that is Excitement!
Captain Russ is the hardest working captain of any Charter Company we have fished with. He allowed us to participate in the Fishing Experience, and didn’t just leave us sitting there.
I will definitely use Captain Russ and the Fin Nailer for all of my future Charter Fishing Trips. Oh, and did I mention we caught a LOT of FISH!
Sincerely,
Gregory B. Martin, MAI

I put on a contest for our sales team at Lou LaRiche Chevrolet,
Plymouth, MI. The winners would enjoy a day on the water Fishing.

I found Captain Russ Jarvis’s web site (Fin Nailer) and was very impressed with the layout. I called Capt. Russ and Booked our Trip.
What a day fishing!!!
Chris Hrycaj, one of our winners had to say:
“I was impressed from the get-go. When we set foot on the Fin Nailer, I could tell this boat was set up for FISHING. The
comfortable cabin had everything that you need for a full day. The large Fishing Deck had enough room for several people to have a fish on at the same time. Captain Russ is all about catching fish. He maintains a high level of energy throughout the day, and is quick to yell “FISH ON!!!” He takes the time to give valuable coaching and instruction, and involves you in every aspect of the trip. I couldn’t wait to call all my fishing buddies and show them the pictures. If you are looking for a hard working Charter Captain who takes fishing seriously, I would recommend Captain Russ Jarvis and the Fin Nailer to anyone.”
Debbie Baudino-Dowling had this to say:
“This was a new experience for some of us and it was great. Watching everybody being set up and Captain Russ Jarvis getting everyone involved! By the end of the trip our arms were sore, but it was worth it! King Salmon and Lake Trout for everyone! It was a great day as well. Our picture hags proudly in the showroom for all to see. We can’t wait for next year!
Jack Theyel “All I have to say is”:
Thank you Captain Russ Jarvis & the Fin Nailer! ! ! What a Day!

Matt Whitfield (orange shirt) must have a Great Wife. She got him a “Surprise Charter Fishing Trip” for his Birthday. They got their Limit, and we had a Blast.

Mark Clark and his buddies had a Great Day! Everyone worked together getting the Fish in. Not Bad for a “Bunch of Buckeyes” FISH ON!!!

Mark Hartzler and the Guys caught a Nice Box of King Salmon, Skamania Steelhead, and Lake Trout including 2 Nice 4yr Old Adult Kings!

Scott Sprang (blue shirt) Booked a Charter for his Clients. They had a Good Day, and caught a nice Box of Fish. Good Work Guys!

September Fishing Conditions

Lake Michigan is very reliable through the 15th, and can be through October 1. However October seems to mark the beginning of the Windy Season on the Big Pond. Guests should be prepared to be flexible for late September Trips. The Sea will be Fishable 80 to 90% of the time.

The Fishing in September is Very Good in St. Joseph. I Chartered in South Haven, MI for years. Many years in South Haven you’d be lucky to get 6-8 Bites on a 20 Rod Set fishing 8 hr Charters. That's why I moved my operation to St. Joseph. Here we have a Natural Migration of Thousands of 4yr Old Kings ready for their Fall Spawning Run up the St. Joseph River. Note there are 4yr Old Adults with Every Catch.

The 2 & 3yr Old Kings migrate right along with the Adults. Once some of the Adults run up the River, these 3yr Olds realize their now “Top of the Food Chain” and they go Crazy. I’ve had Trips in September where we’d catch 30+ 2 & 3yr Old Kings. We can’t keep them all, our limit is 3 per Angler, but their fun to catch and release, while you’re trying for your Trout.

Fishing Calendar Summary

St. Joseph Harbor is easily one of the Two or Three Very Best “Whole Season Fishing Harbors” on Lake Michigan. For my money it is the Best. I know I’ve fished most of the others and through friends hear “What's Going On” in all of them.

I’m getting Limit Catches in April & May when their catching 5-6 fish in Grand Haven, and maybe a couple Browns in Ludington. This year the Michigan City Coho Classic Pro Tourney will be Won within 8 miles of the St. Joseph Pier Head. Pro boats ran over 30 miles to fish St. Joseph Waters. Because that's where the fish are.

Our Fishing stays reliable from April to October. “You realistically stand just as good an opportunity at a Limit Catch May 1, as July 15, as September 20 with Fin Nailer, LLC Fishing Charters at St. Joseph, MI.” The fishing will change, the fish we target and catch will change, but that's fishing.
